Turn out the lights
      #2961346 - 08/23/04 10:19 AM

How would I make the lights in a room go out when someone picks up an item? I want to place an item in a shrine and when the player picks it up the room is plunged into total darkness and several creatures appear to attack him/her.

Any ideas on this?

Well, you could definitely do this. It might be easiest just to cast a blind spell on the player, but if you really want to make the lights go out, there are a couple of things you could do.

You could make your cell really dark by default, and then add a bunch of light sources to brighten it up. Then, when the player picks up the item, it triggers a script which moves all of your light sources down... say... 1000 units or so. I hear that disabling lights doesn't work, so that's why I suggest just moving them.

You also could spawn a bunch of negative light sources in the room, as that would make it pretty dark.

Thanks, I'll try the trick with the lights. I don't think a spell will work as I intend this for high level characters and they will likely be pretty resistive to magic by then:)

As Mode said, moving a source is just about the only option. If you don't want to increment a timer, and want it instantaneous, then simply use the command, "position". An example would look like;

"my light"-> Position, 1000, 1000, -1000

Just change it's current x,y and subtract a negative value from the z (or its elevation).

Another option would be to use the command;

FadeTo 100 1.0

This reduces the screen to 100 opacity over 1 second (complete blackness). This might work better if you don't want to move the lights back into position. Also, and I'm not sure about this, but it might prevent nighteye from working, and other sources of lighting the player would have, such as torches, lanterns, etc.
